General Thoracic Surgery Trials
The Section of General Thoracic Surgery at the University of Virginia understands that advances in the care of patients with diseases of the chest, especially lung and esophageal cancer, will come, in part, through the successful completion of well conducted clinical trails. In addition to our clinical expertise, the Thoracic Surgeons at UVA have a long history of offering enrollment in the most advanced and novel clinical trials to our patients. All of our clinical trials are approved by the University of Virginia’s Institutional Review Board. In addition, the trials are approved by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and when applicable the National Cancer Institute (NCI).
We have a group of dedicated clinical research nurse specialists who help educate patients and their families about each clinical trial and then provide the necessary patient care during and after the clinical investigations are completed. We participate in clinical trials sponsored by the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group (ACOSOG), the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), as well as other cooperative groups. In addition, based on cutting-edge research performed in our Thoracic Oncology Research Laboratories, we have several trials for advanced and early stage lung cancer that are available only at the University of Virginia.
